3 REASONS WHY GOVERNMENT SHOULD NOT BE RUN LIKE A BUSINESS
While both businesses and governments are organizations, the role of a business is to make money by providing products consumers want while a government provides necessary services to their constituents for the common good.
1. Profit vs. People. A business’s mission is to make profits. A government’s mission is to provide services to the citizens like roads, police protection and defense through the military. (eg. Citizens can’t buy their own cruise missiles.)
2. Shareholders vs. Citizens. Congress, the President and Supreme Court judges are accountable to over 300 million Americans. It is a system of checks and balances. If you are a minor shareholder in a major corporation you would not be able to vote on business decisions.
3. Customers vs. Constituents. A business can drop products or a line of business if it isn’t profitable. They can also choose their target market. Governments do not have this option. They need to provide services to all of their citizens including providing a social safety net for the needy.
The key item to remember is that things of social value are not necessarily profitable. The proper role of the government is to provide those services such as child protective services and the National Park service.
